“Nothing In Excess” • μηδέν άγαν
Chilon of Sparta was one of the Seven Sages of Greece* and was the author of 600 verses familiar to ancient Greeks and admired greatly. More famous, however, were three of his typically Laconic phrases carved over the entrance to the temple of Apollo in Delphi, one of them being Meden Agan [ μηδὲν ἄγαν ] – ‘Nothing in Excess’. It expressed the appreciation ancient Greeks had for moderation and harmony, and avoidance of extremes.
Doing something “in moderation” means not doing it excessively. The quote declares the importance of prudence (Greek: sophrosyne), which means that one can stand above one’s thoughts, passions and actions and “moderate” them. It is also attributed to the dominant philosophy of Spartan culture.
