Cleobulus (Greek: Kleovoulos) (6th Century BC) was a Greek poet and one of the Seven Sages of Greece. He lived in Lindos, Rhodes. He travelled to Egypt, where he studied philosophy. As a poet, Cleobulus composed poems and riddles that numbered 3,000 verses. His epigram, “metron ariston”, is one of the most famous ancient Greek quotes.
Ancient Greeks strongly believed that one should try to find the golden mean in every aspect of one’s life and avoid the extremes on either side as much as possible. Because having both qualities produces harmony, goodness, and beauty.
